Well Oppo, life kept getting in the way but I’m back in school finally. Over the weekend, I got accepted (the day after the first day of classes, after they sat on my application for the whole summer), had a job interview, had a friend from Mississippi move to AZ, seriously contemplated saying “fuck everything” and moving to Germany / Austria / Australia (job prospects in all 3), and ran around like a mad man getting the whole “to do” list checked off, and registered in
all
most of my classes (waiting for the registrar’s office to open right now — they put a “citizenship” hold on my account... Bitch, please). Going to register for my last two classes (one of which starts in an hour!) and hopefully start working towards a degree again.
The FRS is tucked away in the carport at the new apartment. Pics later, sad face that I don’t have a garage anymore. Once summer is officially over I’ll hopefully be getting something with 2 less wheels!

Glad to hear it, bud!
Remember, if you start gettin’ stressed just go take a drive out to Canyon Lake, or make a trip up north to enjoy 89A.
I seriously wish I’d owned the FR-S before I move from AZ to IL. :P

For real, we need better driving roads in chicagoland!

Haha well my buddy just moved from Mississippi. I’m thinking a road trip is in order. 60 / 89A through Prescott, Jerome, Sedona and on up to Flag... Hit the canyon, then come back down via Lake Mary through Payson. If I’m feeling adventurous, scoot over to Roosevelt Lake, and come down Apache Trail (23 miles of gravel, then down through Tortilla Flat!).
After a failed attempt last fall to start at NAU, I’m enrolled at ASU. :P Waiting for my German 310 class to start in about 35 mins.

Yep. Out by Galena is supposed to be good. Otherwise you’ve got to head up to WI.
Luckily we have plenty of race tracks!

Glad to hear you decided to go from the 2nd best school in AZ to the 1st! MCC is 3rd, and the rest of the CCs take up the next few spots. Then there’s that collection of buildings they call a “university” down in the butthole of America, also known as Tucson.

That picture looks suspiciously like the Memorial Union at ASU. I graduated from there 10 years ago, now I feel old.
![]() 08/24/2015 at 11:41 |

MCC is actually pretty great.
![]() 08/24/2015 at 11:42 |

I know, that’s why I legitimately place it in 3rd of a ranking of Arizona colleges. haha
I grew up just down Power Rd from MCC, and lots of my friends went there.

Not sure I’m ready for a track yet, I do need to make a point of getting to an autox though, now that it isn’t raining every weekend.
I never thought to much about Wisconsin, that could actually be a reasonable day trip.

So the Red Mountain campus? I live about 5 miles east of there on Brown.
![]() 08/24/2015 at 11:48 |

Whereabouts do you live? Kettle Moraine is just across the border, and a great place to go cruising.
I do a lot of autox, and am going to be doing my first track day at Road America in October.
Also, you need to check out some winter rallyx on a frozen lake up in WI. It’s the most fun I’ve ever had in a car. If you wanna connect and meet up at some racing events hit me up on Facebook. Name is Chris Fairbanks (my FR-S at autox is my cover photo)

Yep! I was west on Thomas. (Red Mountain Ranch)
I miss Arizona.

Well right now you dont, 100+ temperature. You will in a month though. I moved here from California, never going back.

It’s finally starting to cool down here, but we had a good stretch of weather in the 90s with like 60-80% humidity. It was not fun.
I’m actually taking a trip to SD over Labor Day weekend, and would actually love to live there. If only for a few years.

I live in Lake Zurich.
I added you on FB.
What club do you autox with?
Ice racing looks like it would be a ton of fun.
![]() 08/24/2015 at 12:07 |

Humidity? No thanks. I’m from NorCal, but if I had several spare millions I’d buy a shack in SD.
![]() 08/24/2015 at 12:13 |

Yeah, that’s why I’m dating a girl who is going to be a neurosurgeon. I’m taking her on the trip to SD to convince her to look for a residency program there after med school. haha
![]() 08/24/2015 at 12:15 |

Right on! I wasn’t that far from there (used to be in Libertyville), but just moved to Evanston.
I run autox with Chicago Region SCCA, Milwaukee Region SCCA, Tri-State Sports Car Club, and Windy City Miata sometimes. There are so many opportunities to get out there.
The ice racing is amazing. Soooo much fun, especially with RWD!

That’s thinking ahead. There’s a lot of great schools in SoCal.
![]() 08/24/2015 at 12:33 |

Yep! haha
I already told her I’d be quitting my job and retiring once she actually starts neurosurgeoning. lol

Good call. haha

What were your thought on the windy city miata club events?
They’re cheap to run, plentiful and often close to me.
![]() 08/24/2015 at 16:01 |
|
I go there for fun if no other organizations are holding events that day. Like you said, they’re cheap and plentiful. However, a couple times I’ve been there they’ve done some things that have made me worry about the seriousness/safety.
Like one time a car was running the course (not at speed, but still at a fairly quick pace), while people were walking the course. They were honking their horn as they went, but it still struck me as incredibly unprofessional/safe.
If you have an SCCA membership the Chicago/Milwaukee region events are essentially the same price. Same thing goes for TSSCC. All worthwhile, but you’ll get more good competition at the SCCA and TSSCC events over WCMC.
What kinda car do you have?
![]() 08/24/2015 at 16:50 |

Good to know.
I have a ‘15 WRX
![]() 08/24/2015 at 16:52 |

Ah okay. Do you go to the Chi-Town Subaru meets?
I don’t attend them often, but owning an FR-S I know a few folks in the group.
![]() 08/24/2015 at 17:01 |
|
I haven’t attended one yet, I just joined that group a couple weeks ago, and I’ve only had the car 2 months.
I was thinking about trying to go to it this Wednesday. How are they?
![]() 08/24/2015 at 17:13 |
|
Eh, there’re some cool guys but it’s a bit of a hard parking scene. There’s definitely some genuine folks in there though interested in more than parking lot meets and freeway pulls. haha
You should come to this other thing on Wednesday instead. A new company that builds rigs for iRacing and other racing sims is doing a thing where they let people come and play on a couple sims from 6-10 for $20. I’ll be out there along with several other folks I know. A lot of the people that show up are people who actually race their cars, and it’s a pretty good time. One of the owners of the company is a dude who races a C5 in GT3.
I’ll send you an invite to the event page on FB.
![]() 08/24/2015 at 17:21 |
|
Yeah, I’m not surprised to hear that. I can see it not being an event you’d need to attend often.
That sounds interesting I’ll look out for the invite.

It’s actually the student services building at ASU! Where advising / registrar’s office are. I had to prove to them I’m a U.S. Citizen.
![]() 08/24/2015 at 17:33 |
|
Yeah, I’ve been to a few meets. I don’t go often.
Same thing exists in the Toyobaru scene here too. I’m more interested in hanging out with the guys I know race and my SCCA friends.
I’ve got another group of SCCA friends who get together once a month of so at the Outback in Schaumburg, I’ll let you know next time we’re meeting there too.

Thanks!
![]() 08/24/2015 at 17:59 |

Ah, I was only in that building once, for registering obviously. Well enjoy ASU, I certainly did.
![]() 08/25/2015 at 11:31 |
|
Not sure why, but I can’t find you on my Facebook today.
I talked to the guys at the Sim place and they’re gonna have people come in again tomorrow night, but they’re keeping it to a smaller group. Basically no FB event, invite only.
Address is 803C Albion Ave., Schaumburg IL 60193. They ask for $20 to play from 6-10. Last time they had two machines up, and even with a lot of people 20+, I got about 5 or 6 turns at 7min or 7 laps each.

I just messaged you on FB
![]() 08/25/2015 at 19:17 |

Yeah, I was enjoying NAU, but work dragged me back down here. ASU is nice, I just miss the nice weather in Flagstaff! And now I have to drive 2 1/2 hours to go snowboarding, as opposed to walking out my front door haha...
![]() 08/25/2015 at 20:09 |

Yes, but now you’re much closer to Firebird and AMP.
![]() 08/25/2015 at 23:02 |

I mean, I work for our local NASA chapter (see hat in picture). So, I’ve gotta commute to whatever track once a month anyways!
Honestly, the drive from NAU to Chuckwalla wasn’t too bad. I left 2 days early and went camping / hiking in Joshua Tree.
![]() 08/25/2015 at 23:24 |
|
That’s excellent, I’ve been meaning to join something to get some track time. Haven’t gotten around to it.
![]() 08/25/2015 at 23:35 |

Are you still out in AZ? NASA is pretty big out here. There’s a night event the first Saturday in September at Firebird.
![]() 08/25/2015 at 23:41 |
|
I actually work in Tempe, about 2 miles from ASU. Membership required?
![]() 08/25/2015 at 23:51 |
|
To race, yeah. You can come spectate though. I’ll be working on track, but everyone is pretty friendly. If you ask someone where the NASA trailer is, you can find one of the coordinators and chat with them. Honestly I like working more than driving — I don’t like to beat on my daily. If you google “NASA AZ” you can find everything to sign up. Membership isn’t too expensive (cheaper than the ticket for doing shit on the streets around here).
We’re always looking for new workers, too!
![]() 08/25/2015 at 23:54 |
|
I too am hesitant to beat on my daily. Plus there’s a couple of upgrades I want to make. Maybe I’ll check NASA AZ out.

If you want to shoot me an email feel free: cab591[at]gmail.com
I can get you in touch with the coordinators if you want to come out and work. Unfortunately the season is almost up for the year (there’s a to-be-determined date in October), but it’ll start up again in January. I do corner working — your first couple times are volunteer (in training), but then you get paid for it. Lunch is provided, and it’s a lot of fun.
